HIV stigma-busting comedy Positive comes to PARK 90 this summer, 7 July – 1 August, written by Shaun Kitchener. Last year Kitchener was nominated for ‘Most Promising New Playwright’ by The Off West End Theatre (‘Offie’) Awards when Positive played at Waterloo East Theatre. This brand new production is directed by Harry Burton.

The cast is: Nathalie Barclay, Ryan J Brown, Sally George, Timothy George, Claire Greenway, Paul Heelis and the playwright himself, Shaun Kitchener.

Positive tells the story of Benji, a gay Londoner looking to revive his love, sex and social lives one year after testing HIV+. His self-confidence may be at an all time low but it’s time he finally grabbed life by the balls and started properly living it again. How hard can it be…?

If Britney can get through 2007, then I can get through today.

Benji’s mantra has just about got him through his first year with HIV, but it’s not so much the virus that’s the problem – it’s everything that comes with it. Afraid of stigma and rejection, he’s stopped going out, he’s let himself fall out of contact with his family and God only knows when he last had sex.

Harry Burton’s most recent theatre credits include Barking In Essex (Wyndhams); I Found My Horn (Chichester, Hampstead, Trafalgar Studios); and The Leisure Society (Trafalgar Studios). His TV credits include ‘Thinspiration’ and documentary Working With Pinter, both for Channel 4.

Inspired by true stories, Positive is a refreshingly honest and ultimately uplifting comedy breaking down the out-dated preconceptions surrounding HIV and the 100,000+ people living with it in the UK today. Benji’s slowly begins to realise that the only thing standing between him and ‘normality’ is not a virus, but his own apprehension. SPOILER: Nobody dies.
