Conleth Kane on Liberty, being proud, and LGBTQ+ rights in Northern Ireland

Conleth Kane Interview Proud Liberty Phil Marriott

Conleth Kane recorded his debut album Proud – Live in London at a sold out show at The Crazy Coqs in October 2018. This saw him shoot to #2 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Charts the following year.

Originally hailing from Northern Ireland, Conleth trained at the prestigious Arts Educational Schools in London. He later went on to perform roles on screen and in West-End musicals and all over the UK/Ireland before becoming a singer-songwriter.

2017 saw Conleth win the Personal Contribution to the LGBTQ Community award at the annual GNI Magazine Awards in Belfast – voted for by the public.

Conleth has spent the last 3 years touring his music all over the world including Europe and Australia as well as performing as a special guest for the London Gay Men’s Chorus and the Gay Men’s Dance Company at Pride in London and The Troxy in London.

In 2019 Conleth headlined and hosted Belfast Pride and was a guest speaker/performer at Northern Ireland’s first ever LGBTQ networking event for members of the business/corporate world in Northern Ireland. He has also been a guest speaker for Pride In The City.

In the latest in a series of Marriott Meets interviews, I met up with Conleth on London’s Southbank to find out more about his latest release. This video is part of the LGBTQ Singers & Songwriters playlist.

⚪️ Conleth’s debut studio EP ‘Liberty’ is out now

Five Vegan Places In London We All Need To Check Out

Sound Lounge Header

That’s what friends are for. They know you are passionate about your plant-based diet and they frequently tag you on the latest vegan restaurant posts, or include your name in the comments section of a news share about a new meat and dairy free cafe in town.

Which is handy because we’ve compiled a list of five vegan places to eat (or venues with a vegan menu) that we – and hopefully you – need to check out, pronto! Granted, they are all in London, but hey – we are LDN Vegans. Do you know of any outside the capital that we should investigate? Let us know.

Top 5 - No.5

Livin’ On The Veg, Kings Cross
We love a good pun, and the guys at Livin’ On The Veg have come up with a cracker! Their street food festival will see eight traders set up their stalls in King’s Cross over August 18th and 19th to cook-up the most indulgent and inventive vegan dishes they can in a bid to be crowned the tastiest of them all. We love the sound of the chocolate peanut butter mud brownies.  Tickets…

Top 5 - No.4Pied à Tierre, Fitzrovia
A tad on the pricey side if you’re strapped for cash, but one glance at their vegan menu will make your mouth water. Pied à Terre is an independently owned West End gastronomic restaurant located in the heart of Fitzrovia, London W1. Whilst the menu looks a little non-specfic when it comes to how the food is served, their plant-based choices are more imaginative than most restaurants, especially with such items as the Wye Valley Asparagus, Hazelnut and Watercress. More…

Top 5 - No.3

V Burger, Camden Market
At the start of this month, Camden Market welcomed a new vegan burger bar called V Burger – a mini bar or ‘bar-let’ (can we invent that name?) offering a menu of entirely vegan plant-based burgers, developed by London chef Yossi Edri. Currently, they offer three vegan burgers – one beetroot, one falafel, and one seitan, the latter of which is a refreshing addition as many eateries tend to favour falafel; and we do get a little bored with that! All burgers have the option of adding avocado or vegan cheese. It’s a big YES from us! More…

Top 5 - No.2Farmacy, Notting Hill
We love to be proven wrong, which explains why this hotspot is so high up on the list. When we first heard about Farmacy (based in London’s Notting Hill), we thought we’d probably stick out like sore thumbs.

A certain particularly scathing review online recently more or less suggested that this is the place to go if you’re someone who worships Deliciously Ella, thinks you’re more important than everyone else, and is keen on eating what looks like cardboard as your main meal. To us, the critic of that piece sounds like someone who is vehemently anti-vegan, so we’ll wait to judge for ourselves.

Farmacy is inspired by dishes from all over the world, catering to both a vegan and vegetarian diet, organic, free from dairy and refined sugars. On the menu are soups, salads, pasta and pizza. They also serve the current trend at the moment – ‘Earth Bowls’, which are packed with lentils, falafels (yawn) and sweet potato. Worth noting that for every bowl purchased they will donate £1 to dropfordrop. More…

Top 5 - No.1The Sound Lounge, Tooting
Claiming the top spot is The Sound Lounge, an independent music and arts venue that is passionate about independent music, the arts and social responsibility. We haven’t been yet, but we did mention it in our latest video (check it out below). We are very optimistic about this place as Phil has previously worked with Hannah (who runs the venue) and knows how enthusiastic and lovely she is!

Sound Lounge Kitchen
The Sound Lounge, Tooting, London

What’s even more promising is that this is a café, bar and restaurant which specialises in quality ethically and locally sourced vegan food (the menu is 100% vegan!) According to their website, their “mission is to create a space that nurtures independent artists and allows music and arts to be enjoyed and explored whilst enjoying great food and drink and excellent customer service.” This place has our hearts all over it! More…

So there we have it! Those are 5 vegan or vegan-friendly places to check out. You never know, we might even review these places on future videos. Talking of which, here’s our latest vlog….

Right Now, You’re Looking At The Greediest Vegans Ever!

VBites Review Header

OK, that’s probably not strictly true, but we were on a mission – to review as much “fake meat” as we could.

Our friends at VBites sent us a huge box of goodies from their plant-based range of foods, including their diary-free mozzarella, meat-free meatballs, meat-free lamb-style doner kebab slices, meat-free Southern Fried “chicken” burger, and meat-free hot dogs.

We started our taste test by slicing up some dairy-free mozzarella, and served it up with some tomato slices, basil leaves and a balsamic dressing. Watch the video review below.

Meat-free meatballs were next on the menu. We made a really quick and easy tomato sauce, then baked the meatballs in a hot oven for 12 minutes. Want to make the sauce yourself? Check out this easy recipe video we made, then watch our meatballs review.

Vegan treats just kept on coming! Up next was a toasted pitta, filled with the VBites meat-free lamb-style doner kebab slices. We filled the pittas with fresh lettuce, tomato slices, red onion and vegan mayo. Watch the video review below.

Next we fried the VBites meat-free Southern Fried “chicken” burger, and served it in a bun with lettuce, tomato slices and vegan mayo.

It had been a long day for Polly and by now her tiredness had resulted in her playing with her food. That’s not to say she didn’t enjoy eating it once she’d waved it in Phil’s face.

LDN Vegans Try “chicken”, raw snacks and toffee vodka at Just V Show

Just V Show Header

Just V Show is a yearly summer celebration of vegetarian and vegan food, drink and lifestyle products.

We headed down to Olympia to check out some great food, make some essential purchases and meet some new friends.

As soon as we got to the venue, we met up with our new friends Ben aka Vegan Blogger 78 and his fiancé Helen, who introduced us to a couple of people who had stands at the festival. We were both feeling tired after a week of work, but our first stop gave us the lift we needed – tasting some toffee-flavoured vegan booze from Kin Vodka. Check out our video below where Chris gave us a taste of this energising distilled beverage!

Our next stop was to meet Fraser from Raw Gorilla.

Their story started in Fraser’s own kitchen in Stoke Newington, London in 2014. Being both crazy about breakfast and raw food in general, Fraser wanted to add a twist to regular sugary and wheaty cereals, such as Coco Pops and Rise Crispies, as well as other sugary snacks, and turn them into raw nutritional powerhouses.

As passionate vegans loving good food, it’s an embarrassment for us to admit that we’ve not been to the Temple Of Hackney since it opened in London to critical acclaim last year; so it was fantastic to meet the guys serving up delicious Peri-Peri “chicken” burgers. And yes, it was well worth the wait! Check out our video below:

Did you go to Just V Show this year? Have you tried out any of the products we sampled? Leave us a comment below.

LDN Vegans Spotify Playlist – Summer 2017

LDN VEGANS PLAYLIST SUMMER 2017LDN Vegans are excited to announce their very first Spotify playlist, featuring ten of the best tracks by artists such as Siouxsie And The Banshees, Moby, Birdeatsbaby, The Smiths and Mishkin Fitzgerald.

Each season, Phil and Polly will choose songs they love. Sometimes the artists might be vegans themselves, or they might just be making badass music. Phew! What a scorcher!

Siouxsie And The Banshees
‘Skin’
This closing track on Kaleidoscope, the 1980 album from Phil’s favourite band – Siouxsie And The Banshees, is a powerful way to start our summer playlist. “Mink, seal and ermine smother fat women,” sings Siouxsie. “I have a noble cause for skin, there’s just too many of them.” For everyone staying in the shade this summer.

Alanis Morissette
‘You Outta Know’
Hard to believe this is 22 years old. Released as the lead single from Alanis Morissette’s third studio album, Jagged Little Pill, ‘You Outta Know’ was only a modest hit in Morissette’s native Canada at first, peaking at No.20 in the pop charts and No.21 on the rock charts. Hard to believe also that Britney Spears covered the song as part of her 2009 Circus tour.

The Smiths
The Smiths

The Smiths
‘Meat Is Murder’
Perhaps the most obvious song to place on a vegan playlist, ‘Meat Is Murder’ still has the same powerful impact it had on these ears when it was released in February 1985. The title track to this iconic Manchester band’s second album, starts with the disconcerting mooing sounds of cows, before lead singer Morrissey launches into the most thought-provoking lyrical attack:

“And the flesh you so fancifully fry is not succulent, tasty or kind. It’s death for no reason, and death for no reason is murder.” Quite.

Birdeatsbaby
‘Silence’
If you’re new to this Brighton-based band, we strongly urge you to check out their website. You’ll be hooked even before you hear the music. Their website tells their story best…

“Birdeatsbaby’s name was literally dreamt up by bandleader Mishkin Fitzgerald, back in her teens after a particularly long bout of insomnia. Often sleep deprived and on medication the flame haired singer would have strong hallucinations and nightmares, resulting in most of the material from the band’s first record Here She Comes-a-Tumblin’.” Passionately vegan, and good friends of Polly’s, what other reasons to investigate do you need? Press play!

Jane_Wiedlin_-_FurJane Wiedlin
‘Fur’
“I don’t wear fur. Won’t do it! Fur’s for fools. I’m too cool,” sings Wiedlin on the title track to her second solo album from 1988. Pet Shop Boys producer Stephen Hague gave the album its pop sheen. A few years later, he was to work on Superstition, the 1991 album by Siouxsie And The Banshees.

Strong lyrical message considered, it was also heartwarming to see the ex-Go Go’s girl posing cutely with a bunny on the cover, leading some listeners into a false sense of security, before learning of her objection to the horrors of the fur trade. The true punk in her obviously never died, despite the out-and-out pop feel of the rest of the album.

Moby
‘Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad’
Vegan electronica artist Moby had his most commercially and critically successful year in 1999 when he released his Play album. Lifted from it was this brooding ballad, which also boasts vocals from the late Urban Cookie Colective vocalist Diane Charlemagne.

Radiohead
‘Creep’
Vegan Thom Yorke is an advocate of animal rights and spokesman against non-vegan fashion industries. He claims that fellow musical influences The Smiths – and fellow vegan Morrissey – first inspired him to do so after listening to their song ‘Meat is Murder’, which we’ve also included here.

Mishkin Fitzgerald ft. She Makes War
‘Raise The Bar’
Mishkin Fitzgerald, a good friend of Polly’s, is best known for her role as lead singer and pianist in the British ‘orchestral punk-rock’ band, Birdeatsbaby. Check out their ‘Silence’ track on this playlist. Mishkin is heavily Influenced by classical piano music, and alternative artists such as Nick Cave, Patti Smith and Regina Spektor.

Chaka Khan
Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan
‘Ain’t Nobody’
We know, we know, it’s summer. When Phil’s not listening to the Banshees, Curve or The Cure, he’s putting this on. Vegan Chaka Khan did great things when she released this in November 1983. Crazy to think this was originally going to be issued as just a bonus track on the Rufus & Chaka Khan live album, Stompin’ At The Savoy. Ignore the assault of modern-day reworks – settle for the best version. This is one of Phil’s favourite all-time dance tracks.

The Pretenders
‘Hymn To Her’
There were a few classics from vegan Chrissie Hynde to feature here. Unlike some other Greatest Hits albums, the compilation from The Pretenders really WAS an album of greatest hits.

LDN Vegans Find The Best Events In London In July So You Don’t Have To

Nana Bar London

We are called London Vegans for a reason: we love the capital of England, and we love good plant-based food just as much (oh, OK, maybe more).

According to the Vegan Society, there were three and a half times as many vegans in 2016 as 10 years earlier. Which is brilliant news, both for the animals we are saving and the increase of great cafés, restaurants and festivals.

The downside of that is that there is so much happening, you’d probably prefer not to waste your time on filtering out the below-average eateries and events that are out there. Which is where we come in.

Over the coming months we will be checking out not only which parts of London are catering for vegans (as well as the parts that need to be educated), but the best vegan festivals, support groups and cruelty-free businesses that deserve your support.

We’ve only just started out as LDN Vegans, but we can promise you some exciting things in the months ahead. So let’s kick things off with a look at some of the big vegan events in July. You might actually see us at some of these get-togethers. If you do, come and say hello!

Saturday 1st July

Rising Up: LDN Vegans Take To The Emirates Air Line

Rising Up Header

When someone who is afraid of heights suggests you both take a trip on the Emirates Air Line, you should question why.

If you were hungry, and considering eating a hearty meal the other side of the Thames, you could understand your desire to put yourself through it. But this was after having just eaten.

Following our visit to Prince Regent, and eating at Fox & Bars Restaurant at ExCel, we decided to head home via London’s famous cable car which dangles over England’s longest river.

Watch the video below.

How Vegan Friendly is Prince Regent in London? What Does The Fox Say?

Fox Challenge Header

Our latest challenge saw us taking a trip to Prince Regent. The last time Phil was in the area his friend Clair took him on the Emirates Airline cable car, and Polly had recently been to the London Comic Con at ExCel.

OK, we admit, we cheated a little this time. Polly was struggling with her workload, and Phil was busy editing videos. We also needed to get to our destination in the shortest time possible and eat. Yup, you get it.

That’s not to say we wanted to get it out the way. On the contrary, we had one of the best days, which ended with us riding over the Thames on the Emirates Airline. But THAT’S on our next video!

Polly Skylift
Polly looking remarkably calm on the Emirates Airline cable car.

Online research meant that we could go straight to our venue – Fox Bars & Restaurants, which is located behind the warehouse bar at ExCel on Western Gateway, E16. You can find out more about them here.

If pub grub is your thing, then you’ll probably like it here. We have to say, the food but quite tasty but it was a little on the pricey side. But if you’re wanting to take your omni mates somewhere for a fast-food fix, then this place is for you.

Don’t forget, we are always out and about recording our vegan adventures, so make sure you follow us on our socials (link below) and subscribe to our YouTube channel.
