Conleth Kane on Liberty, being proud, and LGBTQ+ rights in Northern Ireland

Conleth Kane Interview Proud Liberty Phil Marriott

Conleth Kane recorded his debut album Proud – Live in London at a sold out show at The Crazy Coqs in October 2018. This saw him shoot to #2 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Charts the following year.

Originally hailing from Northern Ireland, Conleth trained at the prestigious Arts Educational Schools in London. He later went on to perform roles on screen and in West-End musicals and all over the UK/Ireland before becoming a singer-songwriter.

2017 saw Conleth win the Personal Contribution to the LGBTQ Community award at the annual GNI Magazine Awards in Belfast – voted for by the public.

Conleth has spent the last 3 years touring his music all over the world including Europe and Australia as well as performing as a special guest for the London Gay Men’s Chorus and the Gay Men’s Dance Company at Pride in London and The Troxy in London.

In 2019 Conleth headlined and hosted Belfast Pride and was a guest speaker/performer at Northern Ireland’s first ever LGBTQ networking event for members of the business/corporate world in Northern Ireland. He has also been a guest speaker for Pride In The City.

In the latest in a series of Marriott Meets interviews, I met up with Conleth on London’s Southbank to find out more about his latest release. This video is part of the LGBTQ Singers & Songwriters playlist.

Out of hibernation: Singer-Songwriter Jon Marsh on the digital releases of The Beloved singles & remixes

For the first time ever, The Beloved have digitally released all the singles and remixes from their 1993 album, Conscience.

The Beloved were active between 1985-1996 and have considered themselves in hibernation since then.

The Beloved were known for the global hit ‘Sweet Harmony’, and further hits in the UK & Eire ‘The Sun Rising’, ‘Your Love Takes Me Higher’, ‘Hello’, ‘You’ve Got Me Thinking’ and ‘Satellite’.

Conscience was this acclaimed British electronic group’s second album, going straight in at No.2 in the album chart in 1993. However, before now the band’s singles & remix packages have never been officially available on download and streaming services.

The eight single packages include UK and US mixes of their biggest hit, ‘Sweet Harmony’ including a new edit for 2019 and all three mixes of the double A side track, ‘Motivation’.

There are also six remixes of ‘OuterSpace Girl’; four of ‘Celebrate Your Life’ and the five mixes from the DJ-only release 1000 Years From Today. The latter including one of the very first Todd Edwards remixes which became a much sought-after item as only 500 copies of the promo were pressed.

The ‘Celebrate Your Life’ mixes include the C’est La Vie mix which became their biggest club hit on both sides of the Atlantic. An anthem for Tony Humphries, then residency at Ministry Of Sound, and a signature tune for Junior Vasquez at the legendary Sound Factory.

The UK promo-only 12″… of ‘Rock To The Rhythm Of Love’, included Johnny Vicious & Louie Balo mixes. The US commercial release featured Murk mixes as well as the band’s own.

1000 Years From Today was a UK promo only 12… with reworks by 80º Proof, Adam & Eve, & Todd Edwards.

You can now listen to all the tracks via any of the big streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon Music, Google Play & Tidal as well as download sites including iTunes, Traxsource and Beatport.

The Beloved also took part in this years Record Store Day 2019 back in April, by successfully releasing a limited number of 12″… vinyl featuring two unreleased tracks from the original line-line-up of Jon Marsh & Steve Waddington: the Evil Mix of ‘Your Love Takes Me Higher’ and an instrumental, ’Awoke’, from the last recordings they made together.

The Beloved emerged as a 4-piece band in 1985 via a John Peel session produced by a very young Mark Radcliff. They released four independent singles in 1986/87: ‘A Hundred Words’, ‘This Means War’ & ‘Forever Dancing’ were all Indie chart hits. A compilation of those, Where It Is, was released in late 1987.

They halved in size, signed to Warner, and finally broke into the top 30 with their 3rd single, ‘The Sun Rising’ in 1989. An album, Happiness was released the following year.

With a new line-up they re-emerged in 1993 with Conscience containing their biggest hit, ‘Sweet Harmony’. Their third studio album, X was released in 1996, containing ‘Satellite’ & ‘Deliver Me’.

In an exclusive for philmarriott.net, Jon Marsh spoke to me about looking back at the band’s beginnings, and how he feels to have some of his work released digitally for the first time.

Hello Again: Shakespears Sister Announces Official Reunion Album and Tour

Shakespears Sister today announces their official reunion as a band, twenty-six years after they originally disbanded.

Marcella Detroit and Siobhan Fahey will release a hits compilation, Singles Party on 19th July. The album features two new tracks ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ and ‘C U Next Tuesday’, as well as classic hits from the duo’s back catalogue. They embark on the Shakespears Sister Ride Again tour this October and November playing an extensive run of UK shows, including a night at The London Palladium.

As well as the new tracks ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ and ‘C U Next Tuesday’, Singles Party is made up of classic Shakespears Sister singles, including ‘Stay’, ‘You’re History’, ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’, and ‘I Don’t Care’. The deluxe version of the album features another unreleased track ‘Cat Worship’ and remixes of ‘You’re History’ and ‘You Made Me Come To This’ remixed by Catz ‘n Dogz and HMD Pulsatron respectively.

Shakespears Sister’s debut album, 1989’s Sacred Heart was a top ten record and spawned the band’s first hit single, ‘You’re History’, which also went top ten. Even greater success followed with a second album, Hormonally Yours, in 1992; amongst its hit singles ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’ and ‘Stay’, which remained at number one for eight weeks.

The idea for Shakespears Sister began when Marcella was introduced to Dave Stewart and Siobhan Fahey – who was looking to do her own album after leaving Bananarama – via a friend of hers, Richard Feldman.

Back in October 2015 I met up with Marcella to chat about her solo album, Gray Matterz. Marcella spoke in detail about the process of working on her solo work, but also shared some recollections of her time with Shakespears Sister.

I wasn’t expecting ‘Stay’ to be such a big hit. Hormonally Yours was a concept album. It was about this 1950s B-movie called Cat Women of the Moon. We were going to try and buy the rights to it. The whole movie inspired us, so each song is about a scene in the film. ‘Stay’ tells the story of me singing to an Earthling that I’d fallen in love with, and I’m begging him to stay with me, which he didn’t end up doing in the end. Bastard!

The concept of ‘Stay’ and its promo video gave comedy duo French & Saunders some big ideas for a sketch on their hit BBC TV show, which showed them poking fun out of the band in one of their regular and popular spoofs.

Any time a comedian does a spoof of you is when you know that you’re really doing well. The first time I met Jennifer Saunders, she was really apologetic. The sketch is funny to watch because I come across as some doolally chick just walking around not knowing what she’s singing. I thought it was hysterical!

Shakespears Sister sold over a million albums, collected a Brit award for best video for ‘Stay’ and an Ivor Novello award for Outstanding Collection of Songs for the band’s second album, 1992’s Hormonally Yours. The pair went onto headline the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in 1992 and supported Prince at Celtic Park at Prince’s personal request.

The band famously parted ways in 1993 with reports of a feud between the two, which caused much bitterness. In recent months, the duo have healed the feud and are excited to be working together again.

Phil Daniels on The Happy Prince: “I play a character, like the politicians these days, who doesn’t care about poverty, only making as much money as he can”

Phil Daniels The Happy Prince Place Theatre

A new musical based on Oscar Wilde’s classic fairy tale will be presented in three showcase performances at The Place from 3 – 4 May 2019.

The Happy Prince stars Janie Dee as Mrs Bentley, Phil Daniels as The Mayor, Sophia Hurdley as The Swallow and Sam Archer as The Prince. This heart-rending story about a Swallow’s faithful love for the golden statue of a Prince is told through a seamless fusion of dance and song.

This modern musical adaptation is set in an unpleasant 1920’s Laundry House from which the potent technicolour world of the fairy tale evolves. Dark humour, greed and corruption are at work as the malevolent designs of a despot Mayor drive a town into bankruptcy and ruin.

Drawing parallels to the world today, walls are being built to divide societies, so the Statue of a Prince, trapped behind the walls of his own palace, must win over the heart of a Swallow to save his people.

Although outwardly beautiful, the omniscient Prince is troubled by the poverty and suffering surrounding him. He persuades the Swallow to become his messenger and distribute his treasures to the townspeople who are most in need. In a race against time, and as the Swallow gradually removes his sapphire eyes and his gold leaf, outwardly the statue looks dull and shabby but the Prince is inwardly renewed and freed of his torment.

Phil Daniels rose to fame through his roles in Quadrophenia (starring with Toyah Willcox), Scum and Breaking Glass. He also starred in Mike Leigh’s Meantime. Acclaimed television performances include Moonfleet, Holding On, Outlaws, Eastenders, Rock and Chips and guest leads in New Tricks and Poirot. His extensive theatre credits include Anthony and Cleopatra and The Knight of the Burning Pestle at Shakespeare’s Globe, Monsieur Thénardier in Les Misérables (West End), This House (National Theatre, Garrick Theatre), Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (tour), and King Lear (Chichester Festival Theatre). Recent credits include the feature film The Hatton Garden Job, Zapped (Dave) and Endeavor (ITV). Most recently Phil starred alongside Jim Broadbent in A Very Very Dark Matter (Bridge Theatre).

Janie Dee is an award-winning actress, singer and musical theatre performer. Best known for her performance as Jacie Triplethree in Comic Potential (1998) and as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel (1993) at the National Theatre, her most recent theatre credits include Phyllis Rogers Stone in Follies at the National Theatre (2017). Janie has won three of the most prestigious awards in British Theatre; the Olivier Award, the Evening Standard Award and Critics Circle Awards for Best Actress in a Play.

I met Phil Daniels to talk about his role in The Happy Prince, and to reflect on his iconic and memorable roles in his early movies and theatre productions.

David McAlmont: “There was a time when I felt quite militant that I wanted to do a show of men doing Billie Holiday covers”

David McAlmont on Billie Holiday - Phil Marriott Interview header

I remember being introduced to David McAlmont’s extraordinary voice back in the early 90s when I heard a track on the radio called ‘Unworthy’.

This beautiful, hugely powerful song was the title track of an EP released in 1992.

On first listen, I thought it might have been a new track by Cocteau Twins for its jangly, swirling, hypnotising sound stopped me in my tracks. Of course, it couldn’t have been Elizabeth Fraser because you could distinguish the words. And boy, those words were heartbreaking.

Now you tell me
After all the shame you didn’t want to ruin me
You say that each time you see me
Hard to believe
I’ve kissed you, kissing with a liar.

Thieves were the perfect duo in many ways with McAlmont’s soaring voice being the ideal accompaniment to Saul Freeman’s dizzy melodies, which only the early 90s could have given birth to.

A few years later, I saw McAlmont performing a set at Winter Pride, wearing a wedding dress and Doctor Marten boots. I couldn’t have wanted anything else.

Earlier this month I invited David McAlmont to my home to interview him about Billie Holiday at Carnegie Hall – a new show he was putting on at Hideaway: an award-winning live music and comedy venue in Streatham, South London.

Inspired by the legendary 1956 concert at which Billie’s music was accompanied by extracts from her autobiography ‘Lady Sings The Blues’, David McAlmont was to give his unique interpretations of the Lady Day catalogue, while quoting from her extraordinary life story, with a band led by pianist / MD Alex Webb (Cafe Society, Fever, Portrait of Cannonball).

The show, which took place in London on April 20th, included many of the most well-known Holiday songs, ranging from her 1930s work (‘What A Little Moonlight Can Do’, ‘Fine And Mellow’) through her 1940s Torch songs (‘My Man’, ‘I Cover The Waterfront’) to her self-penned classics ‘Don’t Explain’ and ‘Lady Sings The Blues’. McAlmont will perform the show in Glasgow next month and then at St. George’s in Bristol in October.

Hideaway first approached David to do songbook shows for them around seven years ago, an idea that he thought was the fulfilment of a childhood dream.

There was one time when I felt quite militant that I wanted to do a show of men doing Billie Holiday covers. It’s possible that a lot of guys would think that’s a bit ‘too gay’ for them, especially if I get up on stage and sing ‘My Man’, which I am very happy to do.

Toyah: “There’s a common theme on my new album: how grief makes us better people. It makes our hearts stronger.”

Celebrating over four decades in music, Toyah this week releases a new studio reworking of her 2008 album In The Court Of The Crimson Queen.

Written and arranged by Toyah Willcox and Simon Darlow, In The Court Of The Crimson Queen has been newly recorded and mastered with the added bonus of extra tracks. The album’s 15 tracks explore life, love, empowerment and wonderment.

In 1977, whilst playing the part of Emma in Tales From The Vienna Woods at The National Theatre, 18-year old Willcox formed a band. After several line-up changes, they spent a brief period under the name Ninth Illusion, without recording any music. The following year, the band – comprising of Joel Bogen (lead guitar), Pete Bush (keyboards), Dave Robin (drums), and Windy Miller (bass) – decided on naming the group Toyah.

With TV, film and theatre performances to her credit, Toyah and her band built a strong following and started to get noticed. To this day, Toyah herself continues to play her very early material when touring.

Sheep Farming In Barnet and The Blue Meaning are such important albums. They’re so original, they’re so quirky, and they still sound fresh. They really deserve their place with the younger generations. The beauty of YouTube, and performing to such young people, is that they’re yet to discover this music, and I think they’re going to really like it – Toyah Willcox

For 42 years, Toyah has successfully juggled a career in music, television, film, and theatre. She has won numerous awards and nominations from singing to writing to acting. In 2001 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Central England in Birmingham. In 2018 Paul McCartney awarded Toyah a LIPA Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts Companionship for Outstanding Achievement in music, drama, performance and media. Toyah has also been awarded a star on the Kings Heath Walk of Fame and a star on Birmingham’s Broad Street Walk of Stars recognising her achievements.

Several of the album’s songs on In The Court Of The Crimson Queen have been previewed live in recent Toyah concert tours or featured on (now deleted) fan-only releases. Toyah and Simon Darlow have been developing new songs and perfecting this body of work which is now reimagined as a double album.

Opener ‘Dance In The Hurricane’ is an epic ode to defiantly walking your own path through life. Lead single ‘Sensational’ encourages shining a light on the beauty and courage in others, reminding our children and loved ones to unlock their invincibility and strength. ‘Telepathic Lover’ reaches out like a snaking, siren’s call to both listener and the lyric’s physically absent lover in a groove-laden command to “come alive”.

‘Our Hearts Still Beat’ (written for the horror film In Extremis) and ‘Legacy’ chart the intense journeys love can take across generations and dimensions.  ‘Latex Messiah’ and ‘Come’ invite everyone’s inner rebel and unashamed self-expression to be unleashed.

‘Who Let The Beast Out’ was premiered at London Scoop’s 2016 outdoor musical Crime and Punishment which featured thirteen of Toyah & Darlow’s songs.

There are songs here that deal with the darkness in life, but turning it into a positive, bringing a new energy to reworking the tracks.

Early songs such as ‘Neon Womb’ and ‘Race Through Space’ were about grief before the grief was there in the world. It’s also a common theme on my new album, concentrating on how grief makes us better people. It makes us stronger; it makes our love stronger. Grief makes our hearts stronger because you have to reach out further to find those that you love.

Toyah Willcox and Simon Darlow (who co-wrote ‘Slave To The Rhythm’ for Grace Jones in 1985) established a song writing partnership as far back as 1978 and went on to have hits with the top 20 Toyah single releases ‘Rebel Run’ and ‘Don’t Fall In Love’.

Darlow produced and played all instruments on In The Court Of The Crimson Queen

Toyah will perform material from the new album live on tour throughout 2019 with over 50 confirmed dates including a Scottish tour in April, summer festivals including stops in Dublin, Bali and Belgium, and an autumn/winter tour of major UK cities. Simon will be joining Toyah on stage at some of these events.

Andy Bell on Torsten in Queereteria TV, London life, and the 30th Anniversary of Erasure’s Wild!

Andy Bell - Torsten in Queereteria TV - Above The Stag 2019

Torsten In Queereteria is the third solo album by Erasure’s Andy Bell performing as alter-ego Torsten, a semi-immortal polysexual who is destined to love many, lose many and be haunted by bittersweet memories, due to his unnaturally elongated life.

The album is released on 12th April through Cherry Red Records to coincide with the theatre show Queereteria TV, which runs in London at Above The Stag from April 10.

This is a role Andy first took up at the Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival in 2014 in Torsten The Bareback Saint and a role reprised by him in the critically acclaimed 2016 follow up, Torsten The Beautiful Libertine.

‘Andy Bell Is Torsten’ is a unique collaboration between a singer (Andy Bell), a poet / playwright (Barney Ashton) and a musician (Christopher Frost). Their new album is structured around 4 separate themed ‘Acts’ which deal with different aspects of both Torsten’s life story and his self-realisation. As with previous Torsten albums, each song is designed as if a postcard insight into a particular hot-spot of memory.

I met up with Andy to chat about the Queereteria TV theatre show, the third instalment in the Torsten theatre experience, and the 30th Anniversary reissue of the classic Erasure album, Wild!.

You can watch the full 15-minute interview on the video below. Don’t miss out on future exclusive content – subscribe to my YouTube channel.

⚪️ Queereteria TV runs at Above The Stage 10-28 April | Torsten in Queereteria is released on 12 April | Erasure Wild!(30th Anniversary reissue) released 29 March
